Chapter Nine

A Little Short

The problem with the Agency was it was founded on the ability to deceive. It was the whole idea, to gather intelligence and know the truth, then put out misleading information to other governments or people to give themselves a strategic advantage. All the rules for achieving such an advantage were based on assumptions that no longer applied to Craig, such as only being in one place at one time.

All the rules of deception and misinformation were thrown out the window, which was hard for Natasha’s team to understand, let alone apply to their behavior, that way Craig had the advantage.

Craig knew this. It’s why he allowed Natasha to know who he was going to kill. It was a slap in the face, it proved RV was an ace no one could beat, and would be unlikely to match.

The clarity in Craig’s mind dramatically improved since his accident. One theory was the holes drilled in his head changed the proportion of brain fluid to the amount of blood in the brain. It allowed more blood in the brain than usual and permitted parts of the brain to work simultaneously, parts that otherwise never had. It produced a super-lucidity or another level of consciousness he otherwise could never have achieved.

Another theory was the doctor hit the occipital lobe with the drill bit and stimulated another part of the brain that was normally dormant. Neurologists have found many instances where the brain recruits undamaged portions of the cortex to maintain function. What may have happened was the part of the brain recruited had an existing series of synapse pathways enhanced functionality over the damaged part of the brain.

There were some suggestions that somehow the accident and/or the operation changed his brainwave harmonics and somehow the alpha frequencies in the middle ranges were increased. This was according to the data collected from the StarGate project. The best Remote Viewers could generate more alpha wave frequencies in a specific range.

And the last theory floating around the Agency was a combination of the drugs given to stop the brain swelling and lack of oxygen combined to make a slight neurotoxin, destroying some of the well-established synapses. His brain was forced to use other, rarely-used pathways which allowed him to RV as easily as someone else might drive a car.

The conjecture was all unofficial and unsubstantiated, but it did build Craig’s legend. Not only was he one of the greatest shooters, he was now able to see the past, present, and future in some sort of out-of-body experience. This scared everyone who knew Craig and understood the implications of RV.

Natasha would be keeping tabs on all the hotels in the area. She’d be alerted every time a lone male checked in. It was standard procedure for her, and would give her a headache. Craig knew she’d be trying even harder than in New Orleans.

Craig relaxed at the Christ House, a homeless shelter in D.C., knowing no one would look for him there. He
